Cosmetics Europe’s Commit for Our Planet initiative encourages all industry actors in Europe, from SMEs to larger corporations, to take part in a joint industry effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve packaging solutions and act for nature.

Our Mission

Reduce the cosmetics sector’s environmental footprint in Europe and across the value chain through joint effort and action.

Every company can chart its own sustainability path

Through a tiered approach, our commitments encourage all companies in Europe – regardless of size, membership or where they stand in their sustainability journeys – to take part in this joint effort and live up to their environmental responsibilities. Because while many companies are already making significant progress on their own, to make a real difference, we all need to step up together.

Our Approach

Adaptable to various business needs, our commitments bring the whole sector together to amplify efforts, measure impact and collectively address environmental challenges.

Feasibility

A two-tiered approach ensuring companies can contribute in line with their own sustainability story.

Inclusivity

Cosmetics manufacturers of all sizes across Europe are encouraged to join, regardless of Cosmetics Europe membership.

Measurability

We will transparently monitor and measure the industry’s environmental activities and progress on an annual basis.

Meaningfulness

Through corporate accountability across the value chain, we help drive meaningful engagement.

Ensuring all companies can take action

We recognize that every company must chart its own sustainability path. For this reason, we’ve developed a flexible framework where signatories are free to uphold commitments through either of the two tiers and through vertical or horizontal progress. This way, we ensure that sustainability engagements are appropriate and relevant to companies’ own sustainability journeys.

Through the initiative, we also empower companies with top-notch tools and guidelines to support knowledge sharing and capacity building.

Inclusivity

Inviting and encouraging all companies, big or small, to join

All companies across Europe, regardless of size and Cosmetics Europe membership, are encouraged to join us in fighting the climate crisis.

Our initiative accommodates companies’ differing capacities and resources – making sure that all companies, big or small, have the ability to contribute to the positive environmental ambitions set out by the industry.

Measurability

Measuring and reporting our environmental progress

On an annual basis, we will transparently report on the cosmetics industry’s overall action against the commitments – on top of what individual companies are already doing – to demonstrate our industry’s impact and progress.

Meaningfulness

Ensuring a meaningful approach for all actors across a cosmetics product’s lifecycle

Through corporate accountability across the value chain, we help drive meaningful engagement. The areas covered by the initiative’s commitments were selected because they are key to our sector and sit at the center of our operations and their related impacts.

This means that by addressing these specific challenges, we can make the most progress toward ensuring the production and consumption of cosmetics products is done in an environmentally sustainable way. We will continually reassess our commitments to ensure alignment with societal demands, constantly evolving planetary needs, and continually advancing EU standards.

Our Commitments

Our commitments are ambitious, dynamic and purpose-driven to meet societal and planetary needs, raising the bar across the industry.

Climate

Our commitments span the value chain to include upstream and downstream activities as well as company reporting.

Nature

In line with SBTN guidelines and across the value chain, our commitments aim to contribute to restoring nature and protecting its ecosystems.

Packaging

Mindful of existing initiatives and aligned with EU ambitions, our commitments help foster improved and sustainable packaging solutions.

CLIMATE

Our commitments span the value chain to include upstream and downstream activities as well as company reporting.

Our emissions targets are science-based and in line with the objectives set by the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels.

Our upstream and downstream activities are wide-ranging, including purchased goods and services, capital goods, fuel and energy related activities, waste generated in operations, business travel, employee commuting as well as transportation and distribution, and use of sold products , among others.

NATURE

In line with SBTN guidelines and across the value chain, our commitments aim to contribute to restoring nature and protecting its ecosystems.

Beyond climate, we need to work together to reduce the risks arising from natural challenges including water, land and biodiversity.

For this reason and across the value chain, our commitments align with Science-Based Target for Nature (SBTN) guidelines to identify and prioritise high-risk areas for nature. The guidelines champion immediate climate action through the development of concrete solutions reducing the risk of nature loss across the four key areas of freshwater, biodiversity, land, and oceans.

PACKAGING

Mindful of existing initiatives and aligned with EU ambitions, our commitments help foster improved and sustainable packaging solutions.

Our commitments on packaging will be reviewed and updated in line with the EU revision of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD), helping us reflect and coordinate with European packaging ambitions.

Our standards also encourage and redirect companies to join other existing initiatives. This way, cosmetics companies can uphold additional and broader packaging measures, enabling them to exchange knowledge, draw inspiration from best practices and innovation, build partnerships and strengthen collaboration with other actors.

About us

Developed by Cosmetics Europe to drive positive societal and environmental change across the sector.

Cosmetics Europe is the European trade association for the cosmetics and personal care industry. Our members include cosmetics and personal care manufacturers, as well as associations representing our industry at national level across Europe.

Many cosmetics companies are already making significant environmental progress on their own. To push this further, our initiative invites all industry actors, regardless of size and membership, to collectively address environmental challenges and amplify efforts through joint action, improving the sector’s environmental footprint.
